DEVELOPMENTAL EDIT

A developmental edit is the first edit you're going to want on your manuscript. It addresses the overall story with an in-depth analysis, including comments and suggestions within your document, plus an editorial letter. The things I'll be looking out for will be:

  • Character development
  • Identifying potential plot holes
  • Pacing
  • Structure
  • Assisting with scenes needing to be cut or added to

LINE + COPY EDIT

While line and copy-editing can be confused for each other, they are different—though not by much—which is why they're generally lumped together.

Line edits target:

  • Repetitive phrasing and/or words
  • Unnatural-sounding dialogue
  • Syntax
  • Tone
  • Awkward phrasing

Copy-edits target:

  • Grammar
  • Punctuation
  • Word use
  • Spelling
  • Consistency

PROOFREAD

A proofread is the final step in your editing journey. This level of editing is done as a last-minute check to make sure that your novel is ready for publication. This will include:

  • Checking punctuation
  • Checking spelling
  • Removing extra spaces
  • Checking formatting is consistent
